Chitwan National Park is the oldest national park in Nepal established in the year 1973 by late king Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev. Chitwan literally means Chittawon translated as the heart of the jungle.  Chitwan National Park was listed as the World Heritage Site in the year 1984. Chitwan National Park is home to 700 species of wildlife, 17 species of snakes, lizards, and starred tortoise, 126 species of fishes, 544 species of birds, and 68 species of mammals. The national park is the protection area for one-horned rhinoceros, gharial crocodiles, and royal Bengal tiger. The park’s buffer zone contains a Ramsar site- Beeshazari Taal, an oxbow lake system.

There are two entrances to the Chitwan National Park: Meghauli village and Sauraha village. We enter through any of the villages paying an entry fee of Rs 1500 for foreigners and Rs 750 for SAARC Nationals and Rs 100 for Nepalese.

The jungle of Chitwan is rich in biological diversity and many tourists are attracted to the national park from all across the globe. The national park located at subtropical inner Terai lowlands of Central Nepal spread at an area of 932 square kilometers. After around 6 hours of drive from Kathmandu, we reach Chitwan and get into the jungle for adventure and jungle activities.

Basically, a jungle safari is carried out on elephant back and jeep. But considering the animal rights facts, we do not encourage elephant back rides and promote jeep safari. On jeep safari, we sit on the back of an open jeep accompanied by a guide and driver. The guide informs us about the environment and wild animals.

There are two options for jungle safari in Chitwan National Park. The first option is to penetrate the jungle for a long time usually a day. The jeep is more comfortable for a whole day ride and the chances to see tigers are high as well. While the second option, you will take a jeep deep into the jungle accompanied by seven people for about four hours commencing from 1 pm.

The jeep will drive you to the Gharial crocodile breeding center where you can see the breeding activities of crocodile, and tortoise. Similarly, you can visit the elephant-breeding center as well. Exploring the jungle will leave you astonished you are welcomed or bided goodbye with a mesmerizing Tharu cultural dance and food. You can even participate in the cultural performance and enjoy yourself. You can visit the Tharu cultural museum too where you will gain knowledge about Tharu culture.

Chitwan National Park is bordered by the Rapti river and Narayani river to the north. We have to cross the Rapti river to enter the jungle for a safari.  The beautiful sunset view from the bank of the Rapti river is one of the best scenes that Chitwan National Park has to offer.
