The Jiri- Everest trek is a genuine and prototypical trek as it is the route taken by the first conquerers of Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, which makes it not only a popular route but also a tantalizing and inspiring one. The trek starts with a drive to Shivalaya, onto Deurali having a mouthful of cheese in Thotung Cheese Factory and continues passing through the vicinity of the lower Solukhumbu amidst the rich cultures and lifestyles of Sherpa community, tropical forests, glacial rivers, serene monasteries and the heartwarming smile of the Sherpa community themselves in Junbesi, home of the Dumji Festival and Tashi Thongmon Monastery dating as ancient as 1636 AD, and also Thuptencholing, a short hike to the immigrant monastery from Tibet.

After a day’s rest in Junbesi, the trek continues to Phakding along the Takshindo pass in 4 days, up through the valley of the milky river, known as Dudh Koshi amongst the locals to Namche Bazaar, the capital of the Sherpa country, exploring the riches of the cultures and traditions of the people in the local village. The trek move towards Tengboche, through Khunde and khumjung below Khumbuyula, a sacred mountain of the Sherpas in the Khumbu valley where one can bare witness the skull of mystical yeti. Tengboche monastery in Tengboche, (3867m) serves as a major landmark of the devotion of the Sherpa community towards Buddhism making it not only a religious centre but the breathtaking panorama that the mountains construct around the area resembles a beautiful set work of a wisely crafted movie including the Everest, Ama Dablam, Nuptse and Lhotse.

The community hunting ban in this area serves as a chance to witness the co-existence between the wild animals and the humans that can be seen lingering around the monastery, so don’t be surprised when a musk deer is about. Be prepared to be amazed. Moving past chhortens and steep hills, the trek through the Khumbu Glacier, leaving behind great snow walls, and glacial moraine behind us finally arriving at the Everest Base Camp (5335 m). The trek seems even more worthwhile upon reaching the black rock, known as Kalapatthar (5545 m) in the local tongue overlooking Ama Dablam, the Everest and Pumori towering behind.
